Details on the IPCC Emission Factor Database

An overview of the IPCC Emissions Factor Source

Summary

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is the United Nations body for assessing the science related to climate change. The organisation publishes comprehensive assessments of the physical science basis of climate change. The Assessment Reports form the basis of determining the Global Warming Potential (GWP) of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere. The most recent report AR6 was first released in 2022. With the prior report (AR5) being first released in 2013.

Sumday Take
This source is foundational to much of current carbon accounting as it provides the GWP values associated with different types of greenhouse gases. As we learn more of the impact of GHGs on climate the changes to GWPs are communicated through the Assessment Reports. It is important that as part of your basis of preparation you know which Assessment Report your GWPs are from as this can impact your total CO2 equivalent emissions.
