Getting Started with Carbon Accounting as a Xero Advisor

Welcome to Sumday — we’re glad you’re here.

You’ve probably found us through the 12-month free Xero offer, which gives you and your firm the chance to try Sumday at no cost if you sign up before 31 March 2026. This guide is written for accounting firms who may never have looked into carbon accounting before, but are interested in learning what this is all about.

Even if you’re not sure yet whether you’ll offer carbon accounting as a client service, we think this 12 months of free access to our education and software is a great opportunity to at least upskill your team. Sumday is both:

  • An education platform — through the Sumday Academy, we take people from absolutely no background in carbon accounting to being certified carbon accountants.

  • A carbon accounting software — purpose-built by accountants, to help firms deliver audit-ready carbon accounting with the same rigour as financial accounting.

And importantly, everything you learn counts towards your CPD hours, so your time spent here is always valuable.

A quick story: how Sumday began

Sumday didn’t start as a software company. We began as a Xero Partner accounting firm in Tasmania, Australia.

One day, a large client asked if we knew anything about carbon accounting. At first, we didn’t. But one of our founders had a background in sustainability and quickly realised:

  • Carbon accounting is a lot like financial accounting.

  • Finance teams already hold much of the information needed.

  • Accountants are uniquely placed to take on this work.

We upskilled our team, built some spreadsheets to do the work, and soon became known for offering carbon accounting across Tasmania. It surprisingly quickly turned into meaningful revenue for our firm. But spreadsheets were painful, so we built a tool to make it easier. Before long, our clients and other firms wanted to use our software — and that's how Sumday was born.

That’s why our platform combines software + education: because we’ve been in your shoes and know accountants need both to feel confident.

How to get started with Sumday

Here’s our suggested learning path for Xero advisors who want to explore carbon accounting.

1. Upskill the team

  • Start small by choosing 1–3 internal “champions” to take the lead.

  • Begin with Carbon Accounting for Businesses in the Sumday Academy (a short, easy introduction).

  • If you decide you want to go deeper, complete the Introduction to Carbon Accounting certificate - once you've done this course you'll know almost everything you need to get started with doing carbon accounting services.

  • If the firm decides you're interested in offering carbon accounting as a service, explore GTM for Advisors - where our founder shares exactly how we sold carbon accounting services in our own firm.

2. Try it on your own firm

  • Connect your firm’s Xero account to Sumday.

  • Complete your first carbon assessment.

  • See how everyday financial transactions map to emissions.

This is a good way to get comfortable before offering it to clients - or jump right in with a friendly client and learn that way too.

3. Pilot with a few friendly clients

  • Choose 2–5 clients who are likely to be interested.

  • Offer a carbon footprint assessment (some firms even do the first few pro bono while learning).

  • Experiment with pricing and process for the next few clients whilst the you get a feel for what clients are willing to pay.

4. Package your services

You don’t need to go all-in from day one. Firms are finding different ways to deliver value:

  • For small businesses: quick estimates, Sumday profiles, or light-touch “carbon bookkeeping.”

  • For larger clients: baseline reports, monthly carbon accounting, implementation support, or assurance reviews.

The support you’ll have along the way

You’re not doing this alone — here’s what you can lean on as you learn and grow:

  • Sumday Academy: Courses, case studies, templates, and guides. All CPD-qualified.

  • Sumday Knowledge Centre: Written guides (like this one) for practical, step-by-step support.

  • Sumday Support Helpdesk: Our carbon accounting support team who can answer your software and client delivery questions.

  • Advisor Toolkit: Presentation templates, client emails, and other resources to help you introduce carbon accounting to your clients.

  • Sumd[AI]: An AI assistant that can answer questions on standards, reporting, and even draft communications.

And when you’re ready, you can apply to join the Sumday Advisor Directory, so clients looking for carbon services can find your firm.
