How to search the Emissions Database in Sumday

The Emission Database or Emission Factor (EF) Database in Sumday is the complete library of all emission sources, and their underlying emission factors, available in the Sumday platform, including any custom emission factor datasets imported into your Sumday account.

How to access the Emission Factor (EF) Database

  • Click the grid icon in the top right of any page in Sumday.

  • Decide whether to keep it in the same tab or pop it out into a separate window for easier cross-referencing.


What the Emission Database is for

The EF Database is where you can:

  • Search all available emission sources in Sumday, not just those already selected in your assessment’s settings page.

  • Check details of an emission source such as its scope, category, units, and underlying dataset.

  • Expand your assessment by finding additional emission sources and adding them via the Assessment Settings screen.


Key Fields in the EF Database

Each row in the EF Database provides important details to help you select the right source:

  • Emission Source – The specific fuel or activity (e.g., Butane, Natural Gas, LPG).

  • GHG Protocol Scope & Category – Defines where the source fits within reporting standards (e.g., Scope 1 → Stationary Combustion).

  • Location – The country or region the factor applies to (e.g., United Kingdom).

  • Units – The unit of measurement for activity data (e.g., tonnes, litres, kWh, m³, $).

  • Emission Factor (kg CO₂e) – The value used to calculate emissions (multiply your activity data by this number).

  • EF Database & Upload File – The source dataset (e.g., UK BEIS 2024).

  • Start Date – The date from which the factor is valid.

  • Original Source Name – The factor label from the original dataset, for traceability.

Tip: Pay close attention to scope, category, and units. These determine where and how an emission source appears in your assessment. For example, a Butane, Scope 1, Stationary Combustion, tonnes factor will only show in the Accounting tab under Scope 1 → Stationary Combustion when you’re entering data in tonnes.


How to Use the EF Database

You can use the EF Database to search across all available emission sources. If you find sources you’d like to use that aren’t already part of your assessment, you can add them through the Assessment Settings screen. Or, if needed, you can import your own emission factors.

1. Search and Filter Emission Sources

  • Use the search bar to quickly find a specific emission source.

  • Apply filters to narrow results by:

    • GHG Protocol Scope (e.g., only Scope 3 factors).

    • Location (e.g., United Kingdom).

    • Units (e.g., Tonnes or $).

2. Check the Details

  • Review the scope, category, units, and emission factor to ensure it matches the activity you want to capture.

  • Confirm the dataset and start date for traceability.

3. Use in Your Assessment

  • If the emission source is already part of your assessment, it will appear in the Emission Source column of the Carbon Ledger and Accounting tab when you’re entering data.

  • If not, go to Assessment Settings → Emission factor databases and add it into the relevant scope section.
