Overview of a carbon assessment

You are using Sumday to complete an emissions assessment for your reporting period. An emissions assessment will tell you where all of the emissions associated with your business are coming from. Sumday is already set up to ensure you follow the requirements under the GHG Protocol - the standard for this work.

If this is your first time completing a carbon assessment, we recommend starting with the Sumday Academy course Carbon Accounting for Business. This is a 1–2 hour self-paced course that provides an overview of what carbon accounting is and the data required to perform a carbon assessment. If you want a more detailed deep dive, go through the Introduction to carbon accounting course.

Carbon Accounting Checklist

Once an Assessment is created in the platform, a checklist is available to help guide you through the process.

  1. Open the Assessment
  2. In the top right corner click the checklist icon
  3. The carbon accounting checklist will open in a window

How the Checklist Works

  • Each item in the checklist represents a step in the carbon accounting process.

  • You can assign items to teammates as either assignee or reviewer.

  • Each item can be marked with a status:

    • Not started

    • In progress

    • Needs review

    • Complete

The checklist helps track progress and makes it easier to work through the process with others.

Download the checklist

An offline version of the checklist is available in Excel format. This is useful if you want to work outside the platform or share the checklist in meetings or internal documents.

How to Download

  1. Go to the Academy from the left-hand menu in Sumday.

  2. Select Helpful Resources.

  3. Open the Workpaper Templates section.

  4. Locate the template called Checklist To Complete an Emissions Assessment.

  5. Download the file named Ultimate Carbon Accounting Checklist.

This template includes the same steps as the in-platform checklist and can be used for planning or offline review.
